Effects of Video Games on the Dead

Disclaimer/Note:

These articles were written almost a decade ago by Claude Needham under his then pseudonym of Dead Elvis. This nickname was apparently given him by Jimmi Accardi during a music video in which Claude appeared as Elvis (The King) as he would appear were he to rise from his moldy repose.

Dead Elvis was tempted to go back into these articles and update them with the benefit of hindsight and lessons learned in the past eight years. Fortunately we were able to convince him otherwise. So here they are in their original raw format.

Video Games and Their Effect #1 -- Friday, June 5, 1998
In which a story of rock-throwers and parked cars is related. My first proof to myself in a way I could understand the potency of video games.

Video Games and Their Effect #2 -- Monday, June 15, 1998
In which I discover the very real and palpable sensing of another's presence associated with their online avatar through the venue of chat-rooms.

Video Games and Their Effect #3 -- Wed, Jun 17, 1998
In which work with groups is introduced and discussed.

Video Games and Their Effect #4 -- Wed, July 1, 1998
In which I suddenly find myself not alone in the dream.

Video Games and Their Effect #5 -- Wed, August 5, 1998
In which there is much speculation concerning the effect of signals once they have wended their way into the brain past the data receptors (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin, etc.) and into the processing network of the body. Basically much ado is made about the notion that the processing network can not tell whether the incoming information is from a "virtual" or "real" input source.

Video Games and Their Effect #6 -- Wed, Sep 2, 1998
In which there is much discussion given to the role of persistence, patience and hard work.

Video Games and Their Effect #7 -- Friday, Sep 4, 1998
In which there is introduced the topic "What Makes A Game A Game?" wherein characteristics of a game are discussed.

Video Games and Their Effect #8 -- Saturday, Sep 5, 1998
In which we address the question of "What is meant by character's goals?"

Video Games and Their Effect #9 -- Sunday, Sep 6, 1998
In which we investigate "How do the goals of the character and the goals of the player relate?"

Video Games and Their Effect #10 -- Monday, Sep 7, 1998
In which you are invited to answer in as many ways as you can the question: What would be the player's goal in a game?

Video Games and Their Effect #11 -- Tues, Sep 15, 1998
In which the question of respecting the character is brought up for consideration.

Video Games and Their Effect #12 -- Wed, Sep 16, 1998
In which the big deal about "having the double view of being both the character and the player" is discussed.

Video Games and Their Effect #13 -- Thur, Sep 17, 1998
In which we discuss just how silly is it to select games based on whether or not the game goals match one's personal goals as a player?

Video Games and Their Effect #14 -- Friday, Sep 18, 1998
In which Dead Elvis lets the cats out of the bag.

Video Games and Their Effect #15 -- Tuesday, Dec 6, 1998
In which Dead Elvis finds an old email and posts it for your reading pleasure.

Why Zelda is Great Part III -- Saturday, Jan 8, 2000
Quest is Everything. Thirst is Nothing.
